Work to be Done at the Pool

Contrary to what we like to think, “Not everything improves with age.” Sometimes, after giving years of good service, the things we depend on most tend to require a little TLC in their old age. We have found this to be true of the camp swimming pool as major maintenance issues have been discovered recently. Luckily, we were able to get through the summer with the pool, however, we are planning to address and resolve these problems before another summer comes around. Anyone wishing to obtain more information or contribute to this project may email, phone, or write us. (Contributions should be marked “POOL RESTORATION”)

New Classrooms on the Horizon

If you visited Camp Wiregrass during the summer of 2009, you were also probably able to see the new outdoor classroom model. Erected in the spring, it is the first of five such structures to be added to current facilities. Each of the four remaining classrooms planned will be exact reproductions of the model which is constructed as a 12 X 18 foot rectangular gazebo style design, enclosed by screening with electrical lighting, outlets, and ceiling fan.

Any congregation or group of individuals wishing to fund one of these classrooms or gain further details may contact Camp Wiregrass by mail, phone, or email. We will be glad to answer any questions.

Other Items of Interest...

Camp Wiregrass has just completed its second summer with the newly renovated bath houses and what a difference they have made! We gratefully acknowledge those who contributed funds to the 2008 renovation as their actions made all the difference. Because of those actions we can report that all funding needs for that project were completely met. As expected, the beautiful new appearance, comfort, additional space and shower capacity have been well received by campers, staff, and visitors alike.

Thank you for your help, and be sure to contact us with any questions.

9/28/2009

Dear Friends of Camp Wiregrass,

We have completed yet another summer and added one more page to the history book at Camp Wiregrass.  This statement holds true time after time because of your actions and the superior guidance of Our Lord.  We are appreciative to you for your physical work, financial support, encouraging words and prayers as these things are so necessary to keep the mission moving.  To Our Lord, we are grateful for his vision and bringing us all together as one unit so that his work can be done.  May we all continue to be so richly blessed.

The numbers were up in every area this time.  We again broke the previous baptism record of 31 from 2008 by baptizing 32 young people into Christ.  This year we logged 787 campers while we had only 701 back in 2008.  There were 710 campers who took home the Bible Rosette for 2009 which is up by 80 awards over 2008.  There were 239 campers who were not affiliated with the Churches of Christ.  We were aided by 284 staff members and there were 78 prayer requests.  As expected, scholarship use was also up this time (by about 18 over last year) with 58 campers receiving funds to attend camp.  It is safe to say that this year was a busy one but with good results.

We were also busy again this year with property improvements and maintenance issues.  Hopefully, you were able to visit camp this summer and see the model classroom on display.  This structure, our newest improvement project, is the first of five outdoor classrooms to be built on campus.  Each rustic wooden construction will be fully screened, roofed, and completed with wooded floors and benches.  In addition, each building will have electricity, lights, and a ceiling fan.  Anyone interested in obtaining more information may phone or email our offices.

Without doubt our biggest maintenance issue is also one of our oldest camp assets, the pool.  It is not known exactly when the swimming pool was built but it predates Camp Wiregrass making its origin somewhere back in the country club days of the early sixties.  As you might imagine, after 40+ years of use, we have some worn parts, raw surfaces, and other extensive repair concerns which we were forced to work around this past summer.  It is a necessity, however, that we do resolve these issues before next summer comes around and, needless to say, these corrections are going to involve a great deal of expense.

Anyone interested in obtaining more information or contributing to help offset these expenses, please feel free to phone, mail or email us.  Again, we appreciate your part in making the summer of 2009 a good experience.  We ask your continued support and prayers for the work here at Camp wiregrass.  As always our goal continues to be to aid young people in living their lives for Christ.

In Him,

Joel H. Ellis
